Blackberry Network connectivity

If you are receiving network errors even when your mobile device indicates that signal strength is good, check that you are not connected to a roaming network.

What is Roaming?

When you are roaming, you are outside of your network’s normal coverage area and are receiving coverage from a carrier partner. Many roaming network carrier partners provide only voice connectivity so data from the Internet is unavailable even if you see a strong signal. If this is the case, you will not have a data connection until you move to an area where you have full coverage from your carrier or a carrier partner that offers full coverage.

How Can I Tell if I am Roaming?

When you are in a roaming network, you will see a special symbol on your mobile device’s Home screen. The following table provides examples of roaming symbols for different mobile devices:

Model Symbol
BlackBerry® 8100, 8300, 8700, 8800 Image
BlackBerry 8900, 9000 Image

How to Prevent Roaming

Accessing a network while roaming can incur unexpected charges. Set connection to mobile networks to Manual to prevent unwanted connections and roaming charges:

  1. Highlight and select the Manage Connections icon on the Home screen.

  2. Highlight and select Mobile Network Options.

  3. Highlight and select Manual or Data Services Off When Roaming (depending on your model).
